Our Two Cents

The MX-1 is Alpinestars “high-end” suit. It’s very much like the Vector suit but with slightly different graphics, a very good spine protector included and the raised “anatomical” looking padding in the abs area. It certainly offers all the features most folks look for in a racing suit, such as partial perforated leather, CE approved “GP” type armor, removable knee sliders, etc,. It also offers some features found on some of the best racing suits. As mentioned above, you get a very nice Alpinestars Tech Race spine protector which can be worn separately from the suit or can be attached in the suit for convenience (take the “View Larger Pictures” link above for a good shot of the spine protector). Also, the suit has the speed hump on the back and the really trick looking integral shoulder armor pieces that also double as ram air vents. The speed hump on the back is a safety thing primarily. The hump will provide a bridge between the back of a rider’s helmet and their shoulders in case of a fall. This lessens the chance of one’s neck being wrenched forward (chin down position). The shape of the hump is aerodynamic as well (although I really can’t see that as a noticeably functional thing for most riders-certainly not me :) Another handy feature is the removable nylon liner. You can zip it out and run it through the laundry to keep the interior of the suit clean. The armor used in the suit is a hard plastic over softer foam type armor that looks to be very effective. And the elbow and knee pieces are held in position by Velcro attached directly to the leather shell rather than just in a pocket of the lining. This is good for two reasons: first, attaching to the leather shell makes it less likely the armor will shift out of position in a fall and second, not being in a liner pocket means you don’t have to take the armor out of the pockets to wash the liner! Please take the “View Larger Pictures” link above to see these features in detail.
