The MX-1 jacket is about as good as it gets for protection and race styling. The overall construction of the jacket is basically the top half of a one piece suit with a few convenience items thrown in to make the jacket practical for everyday street use. The race features include heavy duty armor throughout. The shoulder armor is top notch and it’s built into the jacket. You can see the armor in the pictures of the jacket. The armor pieces have integral ram-air ventilation too. The elbow armor is a CE approved “GP” style and is secured to the jacket with Velcro right to the leather shell, so it’s held in place extremely well. The jacket is further ventilated with perforated panels built into the arm area. Also like a race suit, this jacket has the race hump in back. They call it “aerodynamic”, but the main purpose of this hump is to provide a bridge between your shoulders and the back of your helmet in case of a fall. The hump would help keep your head from being wrenched forward by your helmet if you landed on your back and shoulders. The hump might also have some aerodynamic benefit too, but I bet you’d have to be going really fast to tell any difference (I’d never go that fast so I wouldn’t be the best one to comment :) Aside from all that, though, it looks neat when you are on the bike. Take the “View Larger Pictures” link above to see these features close up. As I mentioned, the jacket also has some features for convenience on the street too, such as hand-warmer pockets and a zippered inside breast pocket. There is also a nice thermal liner that can be used in colder weather to keep you warm. The jacket comes with a full circumference zipper for attachment to Alpinestars pants. When zipped to the Track Leather Pants, you’d essentially have a great 2pc track suit at a great price. Also note, the track pants come in talls now, so those who have trouble fitting in one or two piece suits have an option for additional height by pairing a jacket like this with tall inseam pants.

Note on the back armor: This jacket is supplied with a removable foam back pad as standard. Alpinestars offers the optional back protector shown below which goes in place of the foam back protector, but it’s thicker. With the racing hump you may find the combination of the two to be too thick. If you want to try the RC type, feel free, you can return it if it’s too thick for you. If you plan to use the jacket with the track pants as a 2pc suit, you might consider getting a full size stand-alone back protector instead such as the one shown here. If you are using a full size protector, you may want to remove the foam back pad supplied with the jacket to decrease the thickness.
