Our Two Cents

As the name implies, the Grease Monkey Jacket from Alpinestars takes its styling cues from your typical mechanic’s jacket. Classic styling – buttons are used for the wrist closure and waist adjustments, and a collar is definitely not something you typically see on a riding jacket. Last time I rode with a collar it ended up getting into a fight with my neck (due to the wind), but it does look cool on this jacket. An Alpinestars patch with a wrench adds a nice touch, and the number 63 is printed under the patch and nice and large on the back (1963 is the year Alpinestars got their start). The pencil/tire pressure guage pockets on the upper left sleeve continue the theme. Of course this is more than just your basic mechanic’s jacket – there are plenty of motorcycle specific features hidden underneath. For starters, CE approved armor can be found in the elbows and shoulders, while there are foam pads in the chest and back (both of which are upgradeable – see below). The jacket is made of a nice flexible cotton material which is very comfortable, and there is a built in wind stopping layer as well. An interesting use of color on the inside of the jacket for sure – safety orange. The fully sleeved insulated liner also gets this color treatment (might come in handy if you suddenly find yourself in the woods surrounded by hunters). Also, if you ever misplace the liner it shouldn’t be too hard to find again. Anyway, the liner should do a good job of keeping you warm in cooler weather. When things warm up, you can remove the liner, but if it gets really hot, you’ll probably feel it as there are no vents on this jacket.
