Our Two Cents

The Scout Touring Drystar textile jacket is ideal for those that need a full coverage, waterproof jacket for touring and/or commuting. A 3/4 length style like this gives more coverage over the body than a waist length sport jacket, so it performs better in cold and wet weather. Also, a longer body design allows for more pockets and convenience features that people want on long trips. This jacket doesn’t include a crazy amount of storage like some of the FirstGear jackets, but it seems adequate to me. There are four pockets on the front and three more patch pockets on the inside. The two lower pockets in front are designed to be water resistant and of course the inside pocket will be protected from water. The jacket has a fabulous liner system. It is sort of a silver metallic looking fabric which feels very nice and looks high tech. The liner has plenty of insulation and it’s full sleeve also. The liner also has a very nice integrated neck warmer too (nice touch). So for cold and/or wet weather, this jacket will be great. I wouldn’t recommend this one for anything warmer than “mild” weather though. It has a couple zippered vents in front, but the waterproof system is such that none of the air entering those vents will make it all the way through to your skin (because the inner liner is waterproof with no openings). So the vents will help some, but not enough for warm or hot weather use. The jacket has very nice CE molded rubber armor in the shoulders and elbows and a back protector and chest pads, each made of a simple foam material. You can upgrade the back protector and even add chest protectors if you like (see below). Generally, I like the fabric used in this jacket. It’s softer and more pliable than less expensive nylon jackets and seems to be a bit lighter (don’t ask me the weight though, it’s just an impression).
