I live in Phoenix and, despite the warm weather, wear gear religiously. When a bus swung in front of me the other day as I went to work I was wearing a good helmet, my Joe Rocket 4.0 jacket, and my First Gear sport mesh gloves. I went down at 40mph. My jacket and gloves took virtually all of the abrasion from the asphalt, as you can see in the attached photo. My only injury was a small scrape on my left wrist where my glove wore through. The jacket and gloves are now toast, but they did their jobs: I can deal with the bus's insurance company from the comfort of my own home, rather than a hospital bed.
